Tjuvholmen

Situated along Gudbrandsdalsleden
Tjuvholmen island has played an important role in the history of Hamar. A relatively large memorial mound has been found on the southern side of the island

It is in a location that makes it easy to see from the approach to Åkersvika bay, and it has served as a property marker or marker of power. The mound also says something about how important Lake Mjøsa was as a transport artery. The memorial mound probably dates from the Bronze Age/Early Stone Age (1800 BC to 500 AD). As its name indicates, the small island of Tjuvholmen (= thieves' island) was used to incarcerate thieves and other villains. The fishermen in Hamarkaupangen lived along the shore of the lake all the way along to the cathedral promontory.

Today, there is a marina and outdoor areas with opportunities for swimming and grilling. Located by the marina, is Tjuvholmen kro (inn), which in summer season is open every day from kl. 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
