In the shadows of Fredriksten fortress lies Immanuel’s Church. This is the fourth church built on the same foundations, and might be one of Norway’s grandest Empire style churches.

The church was built in 1833, designed by the well-known architect Christian Heinrich Grosch. He is also known for monumental buildings in Oslo, including the University on Karl Johansgate, the bazaar halls, and Norges Bank. He was given the task of rebuilding Immanuel’s Church after ravages of war and several fires.

Immanuel’s Church hides many small curiosities. The floor, made from limestone quarries in Kinnekulle, Sweden, contains actual prehistoric fossils! The church doesn’t have a traditional alter piece. Instead, there is a large plaster sculpture of Jesus.
