“Husmannsvesenet” (the household) as an economic, ecological and social system has characterized both life, work and landscape in this region and other parts of Norway. Hesthagen was one of six homesteads under the noble farm Samsal. The horse garden was cleared in 1803. In 1815 it was merged with the homestead Hagen. The farmhouse and the threshing barn may be from when the place was cleared, while the barn probably dates back to 1815. The facility is of important historical value, showing how homesteads were built in the first half of the 19th century. It represents a type used to be very common, especially in this region, but is now almost gone. The place represents in a credible and genuine way the homemaker family's struggle, diligence and dignity under difficult conditions and can stand as an important symbol of this at the same time as it can help to highlight the political and economic changes that have made the homemaker an increasingly distant history.
